Fernando Ferrando Vitales

Senior Industrial Engineer from ICAI and Graduate in Economics from the Complutense University of Madrid.

His entire professional career has been linked to renewable energy and energy efficiency. He began in 1977 by carrying out various off-grid photovoltaic installations in Huesca and taking part in architectural projects for solar air-conditioning systems.

In 1978 he won the first ADAE prize for the design of a flat-plate double-glazed solar collector for an absorption machine, which became his final degree project. In 1979 he joined the Instituto Tecnológico para Postgraduados (1979–1984), as head of the Renewable Energy area.

He was part of CIEMAT’s Institute of Renewable Energy (1984–1988) as Head of Planning, Demonstration and Systems, which he joined to develop the first Renewable Energy Plan, presented in 1986.

He returned to the private sector as Managing Director of SINAE Energía y Medioambiente (1988–2001), with the task of creating and leading the first ESCO developed in Spain for the implementation of third-party financing through shared savings, applied to both energy efficiency and renewable energy. During this period he chaired APPA’s Biomass section.

From 2001 to 2006, as Managing Director of Gamesa Energía, he led the international expansion of the promotion and construction of wind farms in more than 20 countries, which enabled him to learn about the different regulatory approaches used to support and develop renewable energy. During this period he was part of the group of people who founded the Spanish Wind Energy Association, of which he became president.

Between 2007 and 2016 he was Managing Director of Renewable Energy at Endesa and of the Energy Efficiency Unit.

Since 1986 he has combined his professional activity with a personal commitment to cooperation projects focused on energy saving and the promotion of renewable energy, sponsored by various international organisations such as the UN, the European Commission, the IDB, the EBRD and the World Bank, as well as by several private foundations. This work has mainly been carried out in Latin American countries.

In short, his entire professional life has been dedicated to the development and integration of renewable energy and energy efficiency, an activity in which he not only firmly believes but which he is convinced is the only path towards human development based on equity and sustainability.
